Accommodation Review: Combe Grove Hotel in Bath, Somerset, England
When I reminisce on Combe Grove Hotel I have nothing but "warm and cozy" memories. From the comfortable rooms and the scrumptious food to the unforgettable sunsets. I often dream of returning soon.
Typically, I look for 4 things before booking an accommodation; location, price, aesthetics, and amenities. Combe Grove Hotel hits all of those marks! I often stay away from chain hotels when traveling abroad so that my experience is less "American" and more authentic to the region.
So, what could be more quintessential British than a historic manor just outside of Jane Austen's Bath overlooking the English Countryside? Maybe a cup a tea? They have that too!
LOCATION: Combe Grove Hotel is located just outside the Bath city center and is easy to get to by taxi, rental car, or Uber. This was important to us since we were training in from London and picking up a rental car. Speaking of rental car - another perk was free parking!
TRAVEL TIP: Add a GPS to your car rental purchase but also download a Google map of the area before hitting the road. You'll need Wifi to download them but won't afterward. I can't tell you how much Google maps saved us when the GPS stopped working "in the middle of nowhere".
Lovely winding roads through the forrest that eventually lead us to the Manor made us feel transported in time to an old world. Upon arrival we were greeted at the front desk and proceeded with check in. The front doors were open so that we could see a beautiful landscape and a cool breeze swept through as if the Manor was welcoming us! After bouncing around London for a week this hotel was the much needed rest and home base we had hoped for in order to enjoy Bath and the surrounding towns in the Cotswold.
TRAVEL TIP: We missed the entrance at first since it's on a hilly curve and also we were distracted by the views plus this was our first time driving on the "other side of the road". Not to worry if you do the same. You can easily turn around at the bottom of the hill and try again!
Combe Grove really has everything you could need for a memorable getaway. A few hi-lights: comfortable rooms, a spa, indoor/outdoor pool, fitness center, sun-bathing deck, tennis court, quiet atmosphere, an on site restaurant which serves delicious meals and drinks all day. The drawing rooms are so beautiful and a great place to enjoy a good read with with a cup of tea. Also, the outdoor seating is perfect for soaking in the view of the English countryside. The outdoor pool was closed for repairs during our stay but it seemed really nice and hopefully heated.
The historic charm of the manor with it's updated modern comforts is very inviting. We stayed in the actual manor house and had a spacious room including a very comfortable bed, large bathroom, sitting room, and a dreamy valley view. The decor is tasteful with a colorful flair. We even had a fresh supply of tea and coffee for the kettle. It seems the other rooms also have a nice views so I don't think you will miss out either way.
There's something rather charming about staying in a historic English home that creeks and moans as you walk through it's halls or climb it's winding stairs.
The staff are EXTREMELY helpful and welcoming. They also were ready to give tips for local sight seeing. We wouldn't have known about the famous, "Bath Buns" had not they recommended it!
Furthermore, I learned about all the wonderful additions and positive improvements Combe Grove Hotel plans on making in the coming months. I can only imagine this hotel being even more wonderful.
Speaking of food, take advantage for their amazing menu items in the restaurant. Everything we ate was delicious and Instagram worthy. There is a basic "continental breakfast/buffet" which is plentiful but I loved the Eggs Benedict! Dinner was enjoyable as well. The risotto was some of the best I've eaten! My favorite moments were ordering a pot of tea and watching the sunset in the evenings outside on the lawn.
The hotel has recently updated their menu since our stay and it looks EVEN tastier! Including locally sourced goods and food allergy/intolerance options!
So don't feel guilty about dining in a time or two instead of trekking into the city. Whatever your pleasure; glass of wine from the bar, pot of tea on the lawn, dessert via room service, or a hearty steak supper - you won't be disappointed! We weren't!
TRAVEL TIP: When choosing what to eat ask the waiter about the Chef's Special or what is in season. Typically you should eat within the region and within the season.
And now I'm hungry again! I hope to visit Combe Grove Hotel again soon. For now, I will day dream about it. But YOU can book your stay via their website .
